Juggling Life and Volleyball: Time Management Tips for Busy Players

Why Time Management Matters for Volleyball Players

If you’re on the go juggling classes, work, training, matches, and maybe a social life (!), you already know: volleyball is a commitment. But it’s totally possible to do more than “just get by.” With a good time management game plan, you can train hard, smash your goals, and still have time to recharge off the court.

At Creadaptic Volleyball Club, we see first-hand that the busiest players are often the most accomplished - not because they have endless energy, but because they’re smart about how they use their time. Here’s our all-in-one guide to making it work.

Get Strategic: Plan Your Week Like a Pro

A clear weekly schedule is step one. Start with your non-negotiables: class times, family or work commitments, and volleyball training. Then, fit everything else around those. Use whatever works for you: Google Calendar, a paper planner, sticky notes - just make it visible and accessible.

How to Structure Your Schedule:
  • Time Block: Assign chunks of time to specific tasks (e.g., “Monday 7:00–8:30pm: Training”, “Tuesday 6:00–7:00pm: Study/Assignments”).
  • Color Code: Give academics, volleyball, work, and me-time their own colours so you can spot your week’s busier moments at a glance.
  • Set Reminders: Use phone alerts (or calendar pop-ups) to stay on track and transition smoothly between activities.

Pro Tip: Plan specific downtime - even 30 minutes counts - to recover and avoid burnout.

Daily Task Management: Lists That Actually Work

Long to-do lists can be overwhelming. Break your day up into prioritised, actionable steps. This keeps you moving and helps avoid last-minute rushes.

Try This:
  • Prioritise 3 “Must-Do” Tasks: Circle your top studies/sports/life tasks every day.
  • Break Large Assignments Down: If you have a project due, decide today’s step (e.g., “Research topics” or “Draft intro”).
  • Utilise Waiting Time: Have 15 minutes before training? Use it to review flashcards or skim notes.

Small wins add up. Five focused minutes here and there are better than one massive, stressful cram session at midnight!

Win at School or University: Study Hacks for Athletes

Busy volleyballers can still crush it in the classroom. It all starts with working smarter, not harder.

  • Use Time Wisely: Try the Pomodoro Technique - 25 minutes of focused study, then a 5-minute break. Repeat as needed. It keeps energy high and distractions low.
  • Find Your Method: Are you a flashcard fiend? Do you learn best in a study group (hint: volley teammates can double as killer accountability buddies)?
  • Ask for Help: Teachers, coaches, and other players are there to support, not judge. Don’t let confusion snowball - reach out early.

Practice Smarter, Not Just Harder

With limited time, it’s about quality over quantity. Smart players (and coaches) know that two focused five-minute drills can beat a single drawn-out twenty minute one.

  • Stay Engaged: During drills, be intentional. Focus on skill and technique for the full set, and you’ll learn more, faster.
  • Set Practice Goals: Every session, give yourself one thing to improve (e.g., “work on jump serves” or “read blocker’s hands in defense”).
  • Embrace Efficiency: Coaches at Creadaptic often run short bursts of activity, keeping everyone active and maximising learning.

Practice like you play: with total focus and intensity.

Rely on Your Support Crew

No one can juggle a full schedule solo. Lean into your networks:

  • Talk with Coaches: If you’ve got a test or a shift at work on game night, let your coach know early. Most are more flexible than you think.
  • Involve Family: Keep them in the loop about late nights or busy weekends so they can support with meals, rides, or just encouragement.
  • Build Team Study Groups: Other players “get it” - and they’re awesome homework partners, too!

Self-Care is Non-Negotiable

You’re not a robot! In fact, sleep and downtime are performance tools.

  • Prioritise Rest: No one performs well tired. Aim for 7–9 hours where possible.
  • Eat and Hydrate: Balanced meals and regular snacks help you ace both class and court.
  • Make Time for Fun: Schedule catch-ups with friends or moments to yourself. A happy mind plays a better game.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to ask for help - your health comes first.

Real Talk: Every Week Looks Different

Some weeks you’ll be in the zone, some weeks you’ll drop the ball. That’s normal! The trick is to adjust, not quit.

  • Review Your Routine: What’s working? What’s not?
  • Celebrate Small Wins: Every great pass, assignment submitted, or early night is a victory.
  • Don’t Compare: Social feeds aren’t reality. Be proud of your journey, not someone else’s.
